An Interview with Author K.T. Munson!

Today, I'll be interviewing author K.T. Munson! K.T. has been writing ever since she was first published in a young writers' contest at the age of five. Since then, she has released several books all across the genre and age spectrum. Her latest book, Unfathomable Chance, was published earlier this month. You can connect with K.T. on Facebook and Goodreads.

Thanks for chatting with me today, K.T.!

First, tell us a bit about yourself.

I'm a lifelong writer. Since I was born in Alaska, a lot of my books reflect experiences or stories I used to tell when camping or hunting. I write everything from children's books (none yet published) to adult, but everything is fiction.

What books have you written, and what genre are they?

I've written 13 novels, 3 novellas, and completed 1 children's book. The novels and novellas are a range of fantasy, sci-fi, and historical/contemporary romance.

Tell us more about your books!

The one I want to focus on here is Unfathomable Chance. The first novel I completed was the first book in a trilogy that I started when I was 13. Off and on I've written adult and young adult books, but this is the first I'm publishing. Unfathomable Chance is an urban young adult sci-fi novel. Although the main character is 23, I wanted to create a book that was young adult friendly. In this novel, Diana finds a bracelet as a little girl that stays with her for 10 years. On her 23rd birthday, she finds out the truth about the bracelet - it contains the Heart of the Cosmos. Not at all interested in becoming the Empress of the Universe, worse still because she has to find her Emperor before she becomes an Empress, Diana runs. She tries to get rid of the bracelet, but of course more is going on. Full of action, adventure, and just a little bit of romance, Unfathomable Chance is the prefect read for a night in!

What ages are your books for?

I've been told I'm a bit stiff when it comes to assigning ages. Since there are 2 curse words in the book, I made it so Unfathomable Chance is 14+, but honestly if it was a movie it would be PG-13.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Everywhere! History, friends, current events, a single picture or image, or a single scene/idea. For Unfathomable Chance it came from a dream - the fourth chapter in the book was a dream and I just went from there.

How did you come up with your characters?

Unfathomable Chance is unique because Diana's snarky behavior comes from one of my longest supporters and close friend. I wrote down funny things she said over a 6 month period before I started writing, working them in as I went.

When did you first start writing?

When I was 5. I was published in a young writers conference.

Where do you like to write?

I usually work at home, with one of my cats sleeping on my lap while I type away.

What are some of your favorite books?

The entire series of A Song of Ice and Fire, Green Rider, Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre, Picture of Dorian Gray, and so many more!

Do you have any advice for up-and-coming authors?

Never give up! Finishing a novel can be hard and being a writer means you both love and hate your work. Just remember that you won't know until you try. And if you do try, don't do it alone - get an editor, beta readers, and an illustrator/graphic artist for your cover. Take your work seriously, or no one else will.

What's your favorite part of being a writer?

I like having people lose themselves in my books. Someone telling me they stayed up all night reading is the best compliment!

Thanks, K.T.!
