An Interview with Author Herbel Santiago!

Today, I'm interviewing children's adventure author Herbel Santiago! Herbel is from the Philippines, and her book, which is set in her home country, gives an insight into the Filipino culture (besides also being an awesome adventure, from what I can tell!). You can connect with Herbel on Facebook, Twitter, and Goodreads.

Over to you, Herbel!

First, tell us a bit about yourself.

I'm Herbel Santiago and 26 years old. I'm a Filipina. Writing to me is like singing to Taylor Swift. It's how I express myself.

What books have you written, and what genre are they?

"Amihan and the Quest for the Golden Tree". It's a children's book.

Tell us more about your book!

This story is about a stubborn and adventurous 9-year old, Amihan, who embarks on a quest to find the Golden Tree. In the process, she encounters a snake, an annoying monkey, and maybe even death. But the Golden Tree does't really exist, right? Or does it?

What ages are your books for?

9-18 years old.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Inspirations are all around me. They come in everyday conversations with my family, friends, and normal folks I encounter everyday.

How did you come up with your characters?

My characters closely resemble the people that I deal with. Even their unique characteristics are composite of several other real characters.

When did you first start writing?

I started writing when I was fifteen. But I only managed to finish my first novel seven years after.

Where do you like to write?

In a restaurant that overlooks a garden and with WiFi.

What are some of your favorite books?

"The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" has always been my favorite. I also love all seven of the "Harry Potter books".

Do you have any advice for up-and-coming authors?

Write. Write from the bottom of your heart. And let your soul create something beautiful and fantastic. Immortalize the world that you see now. Use your words to make moments last forever.

Why do you write?

I write because I want to be read.

Thanks for the chat, Herbel!
