An Interview with Author Darrin Mason!

Getting to interview an author isn't something that happens all the time. But I'm lucky enough to be interviewing not one but TWO children's authors this week! On Saturday I interviewed Middle Grade fantasy author Lenita Sheridan. Today, I'm interviewing Darrin Mason, a humor writer and illustrator who's recently turned his attention to children's books. You can connect with him on Twitter, or on Facebook.

Here's Darrin's bio:
Darrin has worked much of his adult life as a freelance cartoonist (he is an Australian Cartoon Award winner), and his work has appeared in a number of Australian newspapers and magazines (People magazine and The Truth newspaper to name but two). He's also worked as a producer at 4BC radio in Brisbane, Australia. He is one heck of a funny guy with a dark sense of humor who spits in the face of political correctness. Above all else though, he is a fan of Batman (The 1960s TV version, the late 1980s/early 1990s Michael Keaton version, and the Christopher Nolan/Christian Bale trilogy are the only ones that matter. You can forget the rest).

Now that we know more about him, let's talk to him. Over to you, Darrin!

First of all, what books have you written, and what genre are they?

I have written several adult humor short stories and collections, and have now turned my attention to writing and illustrating humorous stories for children/juveniles.

Tell us more about your books!

Zac the Zombie is a cartoon picture book (which is perfect for 7-12 year olds) and is as truly and disgustingly gross as children can get. In it, Zac wants to be reunited with his dog. There's only one problem. His dog is dead. So, Zac sets off to dig him up. After crossing paths with dead frogs and vampire bats, not to mention gnats and rats, Zac arrives at the grave and does what he set out to do - dig up his dog.

What ages are your books for?

Zac the Zombie is best suited for an audience aged 7-12 years.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Stephen King, Gary Larson.

How did you come up with your characters?

Zac really did just pop into my head.

When did you first start writing?

In my early teens. It was a combination of writing and illustrating.

Where do you like to write?

At home in front of my desk with TV sitcoms such as Big Bang Theory and Seinfeld playing in the background.

What are some of your favorite books?

Anything by Stephen King, any collection of Gary Larson's work.

Do you have any tips for up-and-coming authors?

Yes. Keep going no matter what. And never listen to anyone who says you won't or can't make it.

Have you ever been abducted by aliens?

Yes, and it is absolutely true that they enjoy pancreas pizza and a glass of lemonade with a twist of human blood.

Thanks, Darrin!
